Cold and Compression Therapy:
Physicians recommend RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) for surgery patients. Compression therapy is essential to helping prevent post-op swelling during recovery. In a study published in the Journal of Arthroplasty, 48 total knee arthroplasty patients were evaluated for one week after surgery. Lower limb swelling and pain were significantly reduced for the foot compression group vs. the control group. The study concluded that foot compression therapy is an important prophylactic addition to antithrombotic treatment for DVT prevention.
Patients battling post-operative pain find relief with cold therapy. In a study published in Arthroscopy, continuous-flow cold therapy was evaluated for outpatient arthroscopic ACL reconstruction patients. The pain rating of the noncold group was always higher than the cold group; Vicodin use in noncold patients was also always higher than cold therapy patients.
DVT Therapy:
DVT occurs in about 2 million Americans every year, affecting more than heart attack and stroke, and hospitalizing up to 600,000 patients. Up to 40% of DVT sufferers will develop pulmonary embolism (PE), which causes 300,000 deaths in the US-more than breast cancer, AIDS and highway fatalities combined.
Your facility can increase patient safety, reduce liability and cost, and provide better patient outcomes through the use of DVT prophylaxis. Our machines and accessories, combined with the knowledge we have through working with thousands of surgeons, nurses and surgical center personnel, can help prevent potentially fatal DVT and PE.
